The BUFFER is a necessity when you're running more than 18 1 2' of guitar cable especially with single coil pickups. It is true bypass, but it shouldnt ever need to be turned off. It uses a JFET OpAmp IC. Its a simple circuit for purity of tone. The switch is only to see what it does to the guitar signal.
