The exterior is beautifully engraved with swags of bell flowers and leaves below the rim. The front of the bowl is engraved with the monogram MHL inside a cut corner rectangular cartouche. The other side of the bowl has an open cartouche that has never been monogrammed or engraved. The bowl is marked on the underside with the makers mark for Towle, Sterling, and 5229.
